Homeschool Events and Programs in NJ

Updated for 2018-2019 School Year!

Many families make the decision to homeschool their children. Whether it’s for financial reasons, they are unhappy with the public school system or they feel their children will learn better in the comfort of their own home, homeschooling is an option that many families are choosing more and more. Although lessons at home are wonderful, opportunities for socialization are also very important. That is why I decided to put together a list of fun events, activities and programs geared specifically for homeschooled children.

Many of the programs I have found are wonderful additions to the curriculum implemented at-home. It also helps kids develop important social skills, enhance language development and increase academic knowledge. I will continue to update this list as I find more brain boosting homeschool programs in NJ.

Upcoming Homeschool Events and Programs in NJ

Home School Discovery Adventures – Once a month the Morris Museum offers a wonderful program for homeschooled children where they can expand their understanding of scientific knowledge. The programs are for children ages 5-8 and only cost $10/child. Registration is required. Each event takes place at 1pm and lasts 45 minutes.

Home Ecologists – Families with children ages 5-10 can enjoy an outdoor and indoor learning adventures at the Tenafly Nature Center. During each 2-hour program, kids will gain knowledge about important scientific concepts.

Home School Group – Get together a group of children to create your own private class at the Tenafly Nature Center. Parents can choose from a variety of Homeschool Topics like animal tracks and tales, apple cider making and endangered NJ.

Homeschool Weeks – During select weeks during the year, homeschool families can discounted tickets at Adventure Aquarium. Families will enjoy an underwater adventure that coincides with any homeschool science lesson! Ticket prices are only $13.50/person.

Essex County Environmental Center – ECEC Center in Roseland offers programs for children ages 2-9 that include hands-on activities and experiences in nature. For example the Little Explorers program offers times for different ages.  The cost is $9 per child and prior registration is required.

FarmHands – Homeschool parents who are looking for a wonderful program to enhance their Social Studies lessons, then you have to check out FarmHands at Howell Living History Farm. During the 3-hour program, children ages 6-12 will learn all about life on the farm by engaging in farm chores, crafts, games and seasonal activities.

Home School Art Classes – Children can enjoy fun and educational art classes at Montclair Art Museum. They are offered in 10 week sessions. t is for children ages 7 and up and costs $170 ($150 for members).

Home School Day – On the 3rd Thursday of every month, homeschool families are invited for a fun and educational afternoon at Montclair Art Museum. This event is 2-hours long and includes a gallery tour and art project. The cost is $18/family for nonmembers and $6/family for members.

Home-School Adventures – On select Wednesdays, homeschool families can enjoy guided walks, hands-on activities and more at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham. It is offered for all ages and only costs $8/person. Classes take place 1pm-2:30pm

Home School Days – On select Mondays from 1pm-2:30pm, kids can enjoy home school activities at Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Each class offers a hands-on learning experience to enhance the student’s understanding of nature. Classes are for ages 6-12, cost $8/child and take place 1pm-2:30pm

Creative Play – Although this event at the Newark Museum is not specifically for homeschooled children, it is a perfect way to encourage learning and expand social skills. Families with kids ages 3-5 are invited to the museum to explore, learn and play. Activities are also good for kids up to 12 years old. Each Creative Play session has its own brain boosting theme. It takes place every Saturday at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm.

Knee-High Naturalists – On the 2nd Tuesday and Wednesday of every month (September-June), homeschool families can explore the Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge. They will enjoy songs, crafts and outdoor adventures while gaining important academic knowledge. This program is for ages 3-5 and costs $10/child. Each week has its own theme!

Nature Nuts – On the 2nd Tuesday and Wednesday of every month (September-June), homeschool families with kids ages 6-12 can explore the Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge. They will enjoy hands-on activities and outdoor adventures while gaining important academic knowledge.

Eco Explorers – Homeschool students ages 9 and up can explore the Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge on 4 consecutive Thursdays in October, January, April and June. They will enjoy hiking, live animal encounters and experiments while gaining important academic knowledge. This program costs $40/child for the 4-week program.

Homeschool Programs – Flat Rock Brook Nature Center in Englewood offers homeschool programs for children ages 4-12 that include hands-on activities and experiences in nature. There are 2 classes per month with each month costing $30/members and $40/nonmembers. Each week has a new theme.

Kidz Art for Homeschooled – Children ages 8-15 can expand their creativity and art knowledge with this 6-week program offered by Hunterdon County Division of Parks and Recreations. Participants will also learn art history and various art mediums.

    Thank you for sharing these goodies! First year homeschooling my 4th grader and I’ve been searching for things to do in or near Morris County. We live in Morristown and I’m so excited to visit these places. Thank you so so so much! Any updates please keep me posted.
