A little over 4 years ago, when the world shut down, I found comfort and happiness in the music and lyrics of a Broadway show. Although it opened 5 years prior, I had not had the opportunity to see this iconic show yet, and honestly didn’t know much about it. Luckily, Hamilton came into my life when I needed it the most.
Since 2020, I have dreamt of seeing the live stage version of the show. I listen to the music every day in my car and sing loudly as the lyrics wash my worries away. In March 2023, when the Hershey Theatre announced that Hamilton would be part of their 24-25 season, I nearly cried. I knew I had to be in the room where it happens!
Well, it finally happened! I received an invite that brought me to tears. I was finally going to see the show that gave me so much joy during such a difficult time. Not only was I going to see my dream show, but I was also going to have the chance to finally visit the iconic Hershey Theatre. It was going to be magical!
From the moment I entered the theatre, I was in awe. Located in downtown Hershey, the Hershey Theatre is absolutely breathtaking. From floor to ceiling, the lobby is spectacular. This is also where guests will find merchandise for sale as well as some drinks and snacks. The magnificence continues as you enter the theatre to find your seats. We sat in the Orchestra section which had perfect views of the stage. I took some time to walk around and take in the beauty of the room. As I marveled at the stage, I knew I was in for an experience of a lifetime.
For those that don’t know, Hamilton is a musical that takes audience members on a journey through the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton. Through love, war, and loss, we learn about the rise and fall of one the founding fathers of our great nation. While on this journey, iconic characters from history are also highlighted, including George Washington, Aaron Burr, James Madison, and the King of England. This is a unique show as the dialogue is presented entirely through song. With a mix of jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, Hamilton truly engages the audience while describing important points in history. I learned so much from this show. It even sparked my interest afterwards to research the Revolutionary War and the creation of our nation.
Directed by Thomas Kail, the Hershey Theatre’s production was absolutely incredible! It invoked all the feelings. I loved every single minute of the performance. Tyler Fauntleroy was the perfect choice to play Hamilton. With every note, I felt his conviction, dedication to our nation, joy, and pain. Jimmie Jeter did an amazing job as Aaron Burr, Hamilton’s friend turned rival. My favorite song has always been “Wait for It” and Jimmie absolutely nailed it. I couldn’t help but sing along.
A shining moment in the show was when George Washington entered the stage. A.D. Weaver is a larger than life performer who makes you fall in love with our first president. He had so much power and passion behind every word and note. The Schuyler sisters were also magnificent. Lauren Mariasoosay was breathtaking as Eliza. The song that really pulled at my heart was Burn. Her rendition was nothing short of perfection. I also truly enjoyed Marja Harmon’s performance as Angelica. Her voice and stage presence is mesmerizing.
Let’s not forget the true star of the show, well that’s what he thinks anyway, the King! Played by Justin Matthew Sargent, King George III brought a playfulness to the show. I loved his take on this character as it played homage to the original while also offering his own unique charm and humor. I found myself smiling every time he entered the stage.
Hamilton at the Hershey Theatre is an experience I will never forget! I have seen dozens of shows, including countless Broadway performances, and this show is at the top of my list of all time favorites. From the choreography to the costumes to the passion behind every lyric, Hamilton was awe-inspiring. I am beyond grateful to have been in the room where it happens!
Hamilton will be at the Hershey Theatre through December 8, 2024. Tickets are still available on their website. Rise Up and don’t throw away your shot to see this iconic show!
