My family absolutely LOVES visiting The Academy of Natural Sciences (or the “Dinosaur Museum” as my kids used to call it when they were little). There is always so much to see, do and learn which allows for hours of family fun. We love exploring all the exhibits at The Academy, and everyone has their favorite space. For those that don’t know, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, located in the heart of Philadelphia, was founded in 1812. Its focus intertwines research, education, and environmental awareness in order to promote a love of science. You can’t get much better than that when looking for an amazing learning experience!
There are several permanent exhibits that appeal to a variety of interests. The Academy of Natural Sciences also offers many temporary exhibits as well as exciting events and programs. I highly recommend getting a Museum Membership to take full advantage of all of the fun. In this post, I will highlight some of the MUST DO experiences at this iconic museum.
MUST DO Experiences at the Academy of Natural Sciences
Dinosaur Hall
Dinosaur Hall is probably the most breathtaking exhibit at The Academy. It is located at the front of the museum and offers a sight you just can’t miss. As soon as you enter, you will be greeted by a 42-foot long T-Rex skeleton. As you explore the Hall, you will encounter over 30 additional prehistoric creatures including Avaceratops, Chasmosaurus, Corythosaurus, Deinonychus, Pachycephalosaurus, Tenontosaurus, and Tylosaurus.
The Big Dig
After admiring the grandeur of Dinosaur Hall, make sure to head upstairs to experience The Big Dig. This hands-on experience gives kids (and kids at heart) the chance to be real paleontologists as they dig for fossils. Each explorer is equipped with goggles and a brush to begin their adventure. You never know what creature you might find!
Dioramas
Take a journey around the world with the impressive diorama displays, 37 dioramas to be exact. Guests can learn about animals such as bison, bears, tigers, pandas, gorillas, antelope, and so much more. Get up close and personal with exotic animals without ever having to get on an airplane. Each diorama is a beautiful medley of art and science.
Outside In
Outside In is an amazing space filled with hands-on learning fun. It is geared toward kids ages 3-8 years old as it plays right into their love of animals, sensory learning and imaginary play. Some highlights of this area include the Eagle’s Nest, Shark Teeth Fossil Dig, live animals, The Beach sandbox, and so much more.
Temporary Exhibits
The Academy is known for bringing in some of the most amazing temporary exhibits that bring science to life. From insects to alligators to prehistoric creatures, The Academy has had it all. The current exhibit is Microsculpture: The Insect Portraits of Levon Biss. You can check out this groundbreaking project now through April 23, 2023.
Science Story Time
One weekend every month The Academy offers a unique story time experience that will not only foster a love of reading, but also encourage a love of science. Each event features a science story and a hands-on craft. Story time is included with admission.
Night In the Museum
Ever wonder if the dinosaurs really do come to life when you sleepover at a museum? Well, you have to experience a Night in the Museum at The Academy of Natural Sciences to find out. This unique experience is open to guests ages 6 and up, and it is the perfect adventure for families, couples, friends and scout groups. Guests must pre-register for a Night in the Museum event. You can register online or by calling 215-299-1060. The event costs $60/members and $65/nonmembers. There is also a VIP package for $89 if you want to sleep in Dinosaur Hall. The event includes a light snack at night (pretzels, fruit, water, lemonade and coffee) and breakfast (cereal, milk, fruit, bagels and coffee). Learn more HERE.
