As a former performer and gymnast, I have always been intrigued by the circus. I love the excitement, the laughter, the costumes and, of course, the high-flying breathtaking acrobatics. I also love watching the smiles on children’s faces as they see a clown for the first time or when their favorite animal struts into the ring. It’s a magical and wondrous experience that everyone should witness at least once in their lifetime so when the Big Apple Circus offered Mommy University tickets in exchange for our honest review, I could not say no!
On Saturday, February 28, 2015, my family and I had the pleasure of attending the afternoon press performance of the Big Apple Circus Metamorphosis at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ. It is the 37th season of the spectacular Big Apple Circus and this show does not disappoint! From flying trapeze artists to jugglers to contortionists, there is something for everyone in this amazing show!
“Metamorphosis means possibility. It is the power that turns the everyday into the extraordinary.”
The quote above was located in the Big Apple Circus program, and it could not be more perfect. Metamorphosis is an extraordinary show that inspires individuals young and old. Not only was I mesmerized by the performers, I also sat in delight as I watched the smiles on my kids’ faces and the wonder in their eyes. We clapped, we laughed, we even gasped in awe and excitement during each act of Metamorphosis.
Although I really enjoyed EVERY act of this show, my favorite part was the trampoline acrobats. My family and I sat at the end of our seats and were in awe with each high flying trick. The same was true for the Solar System Fantasy act where the performers literally flew through the sky. My son’s favorite performance was Jenny Vidbel and her animals. He particularly liked the camels and ponies. My mom’s favorite part, and an act I found captivating, was the quick change by Smirnov Duo. We sat with our mouths open wondering how she changed all those spectacular outfits so quickly. There was truly something for everyone!
As you know, Mommy University is always looking for teachable moments. Metamorphosis offers wonderful opportunities for growth and development for children. Here are a 4 benefits of seeing the Big Apple Circus Metamorphosis:
Provides a Multi-Sensory Experience
Metamorphosis engages all the senses to make this an enjoyable performance for all types of learners. The bright costumes, amazing performances and adorable animals offer wonderful visual stimulation, while the exciting music appeals to those who enjoy auditory stimulation. The hilarious clown offers an interactive experience that gets kids up and moving. It also helps kids feel like they are part of the show which increases focus and attention. By engaging all the senses, kids are more able to soak in information and comprehend the world around them.
Increases Language Development
As kids watch the circus, they are learning new ideas and concepts as well as new vocabulary. As parents are watching with their children, they should encourage language growth by labeling what they see using descriptive words such as “Look at that big camel wearing the purple and gold costumes.” Parents can also ask their kids to describe what they see and what they think will happen next. At the end of the show, discuss as a family what your favorite part was and why. This helps improve conversational language as well as comprehension skills.
A Wonderful Introduction to Theater and the Arts
The Big Apple Circus is the perfect way to introduce children to the world of theater and performing arts. The one ring design ensures that every seat is a great seat and all attendees feel engaged in the show. It is also an open and inviting atmosphere which makes children feel more comfortable. The circus is also relatable to children as they are used to bright colors from watching their favorite cartoon characters or playing with their favorite games. In addition, many children love animals so this portion of the show really captivates them and sparks their love of the performing arts.

The Big Apple Circus introduces kids the arts using a variety of performances that families will love!
The Big Apple Circus also makes sure that EVERYONE is able to be introduced to the arts. On March 10, 2015, there will be two Autism friendly shows at TD Bank Ballpark. To help make audience members with Autism more comfortable, the sound will be lowered, the lights will be evened out and there will be a calming center equipped with soft mats, bean bag chairs and calm professionals. A Pictorial Social Narrative can be obtained in advance to help prepare children for the show. What’s even better is that all tickets for these performances are half-price!
Fosters Social Awareness
Attending a performance like Metamorphosis helps children understand socially acceptable behavior. They learn when they should stand up, clap or even yell. For some kids, these are difficult skills to learn and understand. The laid back atmosphere of this circus allows kids to develop these skills without anxiety or worry. The Autism friendly show mentioned above is a wonderful way to introduce children with sensory issues to a theatrical performance as it provides a non-judgmental and supportive environment for kids and parents.
From now until March 15, 2015, families can enjoy this breathtaking, entertaining and comical show. Directed by West Hyler, this show will bring your family joy, laughter and amazement.
