In full disclosure, I was provided with a Space Scouts kit in exchange for my honest review.
My son loves science! He gets so excited when we conduct experiments, make volcanoes and watch shows about space. So when I found Space Scouts on Twitter I began following them immediately. A monthly subscription for science activities; it doesn’t get any better than that for my future scientist!
For those of you who have never heard of Space Scouts, it is a monthly subscription for kids that allows them to explore and discover the wonder of science and technology. For only $11.95 a month (plus $3 for shipping), kids ages 6 and up will enjoy a wide variety of science based activities. When the box arrived in the mail with a rocket ship sticker on it, my son nearly fell over! He bounced up and down in excitement. He could not wait to open it up and begin learning! I was also thrilled to open the box and find such fun and engaging activities perfect for young children interested in the field of science, especially Astronomy!
We started by looking at each worksheet to decide where we wanted our journey to begin. Our kit focused on astronauts and what it is like to travel in space. It came with a fun robotic arm and two astronauts for hands-on learning. Since my son was excited to play with the new toy, we decided to work on the worksheet that listed activities using the robotic arm.
My son had a great time learning about gravity and completing a letter game that taught him that “weak gravity and spaceship movement cause an astronaut to FLOAT.” This task involved visual-tracking, fine motor and writing skills. It also focused on letter recognition. Once the letter game was completed, we worked on the fun “Challenge” that involved using the robotic arm to move objects.
My son pretended to be an astronaut in space by using a robotic arm to lift objects in his spaceship. He did a wonderful job picking up one astronaut toy and used his problem solving skills to pick up two figures at the same time. He also had a fun time figuring out how to turn on and off light switches and faucets. It was a great task to boost fine motor skills.
The back of the worksheet involved a fun spacesuit match-up game. Since my son cannot read yet, it was a great exercise for us to do together. We learned all about the different parts of a spacesuit and how it helps an astronaut perform his job. On the bottom of the sheet, my son did a great job listening to directions and circling the food that would be best for astronauts to eat in space.
The last astronaut worksheet involved learning about the different jobs astronauts can have. We then discussed what kind of astronaut my son would want to be. This opened up great communication which helps improve language skills and vocabulary. My son then drew his face inside a picture of an astronaut helmet already provided on the page.
Our kit also came with a fun sticker scramble which my son LOVED completing. He felt such pride when the astronaut picture was complete. We also enjoyed the constellation worksheet which taught us all about Ursa Major and the Big Dipper. My son used his various academic and problem solving skills to complete the constellation activities worksheet.
Space Scouts is the perfect gift idea for children who love learning about science and space! Not only is it tons of fun, It also has so many educational and developmental benefits!
4 Developmental Benefits of Space Scouts
Enhances Problem Solving Skills: As kids complete activities and solve various challenges, they are enhancing their problem solving skills. Tasks involve thinking and reasoning which help boost cognitive development.
Increases Writing and Reading Skills: Each activity worksheet helps kids work on their reading skills (both decoding and comprehension) as well as their writing skills. Kids are able to learn new vocabulary and perfect their ability to write letters, words and pictures.
Expands Academic Knowledge: Each month kids will learn more and more about the world of science and space. They will expand their knowledge of not only scientific concepts but letter, number and word recognition as well.
Boosts Confidence: As a child completes an activity and/or challenge, they feel a sense of accomplishment and pride that leads to greater confidence. Increased confidence helps increase motivation and success!
As you can see, Space Scouts is an exciting and fun learning tool that kids can enjoy month after month. The learning never ends with Space Scouts.
