Sensory Friendly Theaters in NJ
A Sensory Friendly Performance is one that has been adapted to provide a relaxed and safe environment for individuals with autism, learning differences, or other sensory and communication needs so that they and their families may enjoy live theater together. At Mommy University, we know the importance of introducing kids to the performing arts so we wanted to share a list of theatres in NJ that offer sensory friendly performances so the entire family can experience the arts together!
Count Basie Theatre, Red Bank
The Count Basie Theatre will be presenting programs for children on the spectrum. It will be a very safe and judgment free environment. Children will be permitted to bring electronic devices, snacks and any object they need. House lights will remain bright and sudden scary noises will be eliminated.
Crossroads Theatre, New Brunswick
The Crossroads Theatre will offer a relaxed atmosphere in which the audience is free to talk and vocalize, and leave and re-enter the seating area as needed. There will also be space throughout the theater for standing and moving around.
McCarter Theatre, Princeton
McCarter Theatre offers Relaxed Performances of select shows throughout the season. Each Relaxed Performance is adapted to provide a relaxed and safe environment for individuals with autism, learning differences, or other sensory and communication needs. This allows the entire family to enjoy the show together.
Paper Mill Playhouse, Millburn
The Paper Mill Playhouse offers activity areas with chill out zone provided, BYO snacks and drinks, consistent sound level and lower volume.
Shea Center for Performing Arts, Wayne
The Shea Center for Performing Arts is located at William Paterson University. WP Presents currently offers 60-minute sensory-friendly productions open to children on the autism spectrum.
State Theatre New Jersey, New Brunswick
Located in New Brunswick, State Theatre offers an amazing variety of family shows including Relaxed Performances. These shows offer an opportunity for families with children with autism or other sensory needs to enjoy a theatrical performance. Each show provides modified lighting and sound, judgment free environment, a calming area with soft seating, toys and activities, ushers and volunteers to offer a helping hand and a social narrative provided in advance.
The Theatre at Raritan Valley Community College, Branchburg
RVCC Arts offers sensory friendly performances at various times.
Union County Performing Arts Center, Rahway
The Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway offers sensory friendly music, theater and dance performances that are specially adapted for children and adults with autism and other sensory needs. During these shows, children are allowed to talk, a private play area is available, fidget and stress-free toys are available to borrow and autism specialists are available throughout the performance to provide assistance if needed.
