FREE Summer Movies at NJ State Theatre

Looking for something fun AND affordable to do this summer? Well, look no further. This summer the NJ State Theatre located in New Brunswick is offering FREE movies that the entire family will love. Movies are offered at both 10:30am and 7pm so even more families can experience the fun. Admission is first come, first served so I recommend reserving your ticket online before heading to the theatre.

The FREE Summer Movies Series is perfect for families, but it also makes for a great outing with friends, scout groups, and camps as well as a fun field trip for summer school or ESY. It is also a great way to spend a rainy or really hot summer day. All movies will include Spanish subtitles making it an inclusive experience.

Benefits of Summer Movies

Encourages Appropriate Social Behavior

Taking kids to the movies beginning at a young age is a wonderful way to encourage, teach, and model appropriate social behavior. While watching a movie, children learn to sit still for long periods of time, stay quiet, and focus. At first, your child may not have the stamina for an entire movie, and that’s okay. Free movies allow you to help your child build their stamina and social skills in a controlled setting.

Enhances Language Development

“How can my child increase language development by watching a movie?” you might ask. There are so many ways! First, your child is taking in language while watching. They are learning new vocabulary words, social language, and grammar. Second, in order to understand the movie, your child has to comprehend the dialogue. This improves their receptive language skills. Lastly, the State Theatre offers Spanish subtitles so this helps bilingual children as well as encourages monolingual children to learn Spanish. Another great way to increase language while at the movies is to ask your child questions afterwards. Have them summarize the movie, name their favorite part, or share what they think a sequel would be about.

Promotes Family Bonding

The summer is a great time to bond as a family without the ongoing pressure of school and sports. Going to the movies as a family has always been a wonderful way to foster this relationship. Before or after the movie, you can grab a bite to eat together and talk. After the movie, have conversations about the movie. My family loves to rate movies after we see them which is always a fun experience.
