Science is all around us! We never have to go far to point out something scientific to our children. It is in our homes, in our bodies, outside; it is EVERYWHERE!
Science is the perfect subject for kids as children are naturally curious. They use all their senses to observe and learn about the world around them. Children can and do perform their own science experiments every day, and they don’t even know it! They are always trying to figure out how things work and how there hands can have an impact on their world and create change. That is the essence of science!
Children also LOVE hands-on activities, and what is more hands-on than science? Most kids love getting dirty, touching bugs and creating things. They love mixing things together to see what happens, learning about new animals and reptiles, playing with computers, gazing at the stars and making “discoveries.” Kids and Science are a perfect match!
Now that we know and understand why kids love science, why should parents encourage this interest and love?
What I love the most is that science encourages thinking and reasoning. They have to plan and predict what will happen, and if it doesn’t work out as they hoped, then they have to figure out why. It creates a level of wonder and excitement. Here is a quote I found that is perfect:
“It can teach children to form their own opinions rather than taking those of others for granted” – Camille Thomson Australian Institute of Policy and Science
Encouraging the love of science has so many wonderful benefits for children. This love and appreciation should start at a young age when kids are the most curious and experimental.
